May I suggest http://www.freeforums.org/ no in forum advertising. Or possibly email the forum hosting company and ask them to advertise anything but something antiunion. Good work on the forums, believe me, I understand what its like to work hard on something like this, and not have much participation.
_________________
Jason Brown

Hi jwbrown,

I'm glad to see you enjoy the site! The forum is hosted, for free, by phpBBnow.com. phpBBnow.com provides free forums for users under the condition that phpBBnow.com retains the right to advertise, within the forums, for it's clients. We could upgrade to pay forums in order to remove all ads, however, the free and pay forums operate nearly identically and there really aren't very many users of the forums to warrant upgrading. This is solely my opinion. For those interested in upgrading the forums (or making other changes to the site [i.e. updating information]), please contact the International Website Administrator at igua143@prodigy.net.

Hello Everyone,

I would just like to convey that in order to remain fiscally responsible, we chose to utilize free software in order to provide these forums for use by the Membership of the IGUA. However, the company which provides this free service does so under the stipulation that at least one entry be made into one of the forums at least once per month. Unforunately, the forums are not being utilized in enough frequency to meet this requirement. Unless this changes, and Member begin to utilize the forums, we will need to change our forums provider to a less desirable service which will provide fewer options. Please take an opportunity to contribute to the forums.

Hi All,

I have some sad news to relate, Tyrone Tyson the I.G.U.A. Region 7 President passed away on Sept. 22, 2006. I only learned of it on Fri. Sept. 29 in the Courier Journal Paper. We had talked last in Augest I believe, I don't know any of the details as to what happened, I believe he was 53 years old.

Tyrone was managing the Region 7 affairs and the treasury as well for quite a while, he will be missed. As the Asst. VP to the Region I will try to contact someone through the telephone numbers that I have for Tyrone to try to get the Region records and keep everything running as smoothly as possible.

Hello Everyone,

While we have received very positive feedback about the new site in general, the forums have not utilized to a very large degree. And, as good communication is important to every organization, it is our intention to assist in facilitating some of the communications within the IGUA, here, on our site. If, however, the current forums are not used on a more regular basis (at least once a month), the forums host (phpBBnow.com) will delete the IGUA forums. If that occurs, we may then utilize a less elaborate forums provider.

So, please post every now and then, if for nothing more than just to say 'hi'.
> Dear Derek:
>
> Thank you for contacting me. I am always glad to hear from you.
>
> Because I support the rights of American workers, I was pleased when the
> House of Representatives passed the Employee Free Choice Act, and I am a
> proud co-sponsor of this legislation in the Senate. I supported cloture
> on the bill, and although it did not pass, momentum is on our side and
> eventually we will be able to pass this crucial legislation.
>
> The fundamental right of workers to associate freely and join together to
> form a union is being threatened today. One in every four employers
> unlawfully fires workers when they try to form a union and, far too often,
> workers are threatened and intimidated when they exercise their
> fundamental rights in the workplace. Once workers demonstrate their
> support for forming a union, they often face enormous obstacles in
> obtaining a first contract because many employers refuse to bargain in
> good faith.
>
> Unions have proven to make a critical difference in the lives of American
> workers and families. On average, union workers earn 28 percent more than
> non-union workers. Union workers are more than twice as likely to have a
> pension plan, and four out of five union workers have health benefits,
> compared to only half of non-union workers. Unions make the vital
> difference between poverty-level wages and a decent living for millions of
> workers in the United States.
>
> The Employee Free Choice Act would allow employees to form, join or
> assist labor organizations to help ensure that employees have decent wages
> and a safe working environment. The bill would establish a more efficient
> system for enabling employees to form a union and negotiate their first
> collective bargaining agreement. At the same time, this legislation would
> increase penalties and remedies against employers engaging in unfair labor
> practices during organizing efforts.
>
> I believe that protecting the rights of workers is a matter of
> fundamental fairness and is the best way to guarantee that American
> families receive the fair wages and quality healthcare they deserve.
> Please be assured that I will continue to support legislation that is in
> the best interest of America's workers.
>
> Again, thanks for sharing your views with me. Please don't hesitate to
> let me know how you feel on any issue that concerns you.
>
> Sincerely,

Hi Ernie,

I understand and appreciate your zest to expand the IGUA and frustrations in regards to some of the federal guidelines which restrict which workers Labor Unions, such as the IGUA, are able to represent. You're right, some Unions such as the aforementioned UAW, represents workers wthin a wide array of professions, including those who work in security. Essentially, what federal law states, within the National Labor Relations Act/ Taft-Hartley Act (http://www.angelfire.com/planet/igua/NationalLaborRelationsAct.html), is that the National Labor Relations Board may not certify a Labor Union as the bargaining agent for workers within the field of Security if that Labor Union also admits workers other than those employed within the field of security. Specifically meaning, no Labor Union (which admits other than security workers) may not petition the NLRB for an election in which the NLRB certifies the Union as the bargaining agent for any bargaining unit of security workers. However, a Labor Union (which admits other than security workers) may gain certification through other means such as reaching an agreement with an Employer. This may be done through a card-check agreement or any other method in which the Union and it's proposed bargaining group is able to apply leverage in order for such an agreement to be made.

This has both positive and negative effects in regards to the IGUA organizing new members; Obviously, one of the negatives is that it provides for a very narrow sector of workers which the IGUA may organize (although this 'negative' may also be view as a positive in that it provides the IGUA the ability to focus on representing workers within one field. One of the positives is that the IGUA enjoys a large advantage over 'mixed' Labor Unions in that the IGUA can petition the NLRB and, when the IGUA receives a majority vote from a proposed bargaing group in favor of joining the Union, the NLRB certifies the IGUA as the bargaining agent for the workers and the Employer MUST bargain with the workers and their Union in good faith. (Some of the other larger, Unions which exclusively represent security workers, recently testified before Congress in support of maintaining this difference).[color=blue]
It keeps coming to my attention how Unions like UAW represent a diverse group of people in a variety of fields. I believe the IGUA should petition the NLRB to change the status of who we can represent. I am told we can only represent security officers because we are independant or some other answer and then I watch as the UAW represent casino workers and other groups that have nothing to do with automotive work.

I have put the question to our new International President recently to get his opinion. I believe we should be able to represent anyone who wants to join our Union and that anything else hinders our ability to expand.
